A brief look at the differences of Coaching, counselling, and mentoring and how they inform my work.
Therapeutic coaching is not something you hear too often compared to Coaching, Counselling and mentoring.
Seeing as I was a former mentor to newly qualified teachers and am now a therapeutic coach and a counsellor, it feels important to make the distinction between the three approaches.
All three of these approaches are used for personal and professional growth and development to achieve goals and unlock the individual's full potential. Despite this, they do have unique characteristics and purposes. Some also require more training than others.
All three approaches are also available to a variety of ages, gender, professions, etc... They can also be provided on a 1:1 basis or in group settings. Within counselling and coaching, you will also notice many approaches used like mindset coach, performance coach, CBT, person-centred counselling, etc...
Coaching:
Coaching is future-oriented and focuses on achieving specific goals and enhancing performance in various areas of life, such as career, relationships and personal development.
A coach acts as a facilitator, empowering individuals to
Identify and use their strengths
Overcome obstacles and barriers
Make progress toward their desired outcomes.
Gain clarity in vision, mission and values
Develop effective strategies and systems where necessary
The coaching process typically involves setting clear objectives, developing action plans, and implementing strategies to achieve those objectives. They will guide the individuals to work through barriers that are preventing from achieving said objectives.
Coaches employ powerful questioning techniques and many other skills to encourage self-reflection and help clients gain clarity about their aspirations, values, and beliefs. They provide guidance, support, and accountability, helping clients stay on track and navigate challenges along their journey.
Counselling:
Counselling centres on emotional well-being, mental health, and psychological healing.
Counsellors are trained professionals who specialize in providing empathy, and emotional support to individuals experiencing emotional challenges, such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, bereavement, unforeseen changes, chronic illness or relationship issues.
A counsellor ensures a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment, allowing the individual to understand the past, gain self-awareness, develop coping strategies, and make positive changes in their lives.
Counsellors help clients explore their:
Emotions
Thoughts
Behavioural patterns
Relationships
Trauma
Negative self-beliefs
Counselling can be short-term or long-term, depending on the need and approach used. There are many forms of therapy such as person-centred, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gestalt, art therapy, EMDR, integrative counselling. and play therapy to name a few,
Mentoring:
Mentoring revolves around a relationship between an experienced individual (the mentor) and an individual in need of support (the mentee) in the same industry.
The mentor offers:
guidance
advice
support
Mentoring looks at improving the mentee's personal and professional development and achieving their goals. The mentor will act as a role model, and offer their experience, feedback and resources to support the mentee in developing their skills and building confidence.
While coaching, counselling, and mentoring share the common objective of fostering personal and professional growth, they serve distinct purposes and operate within different contexts.
Coaching concentrates on identifying and overcoming barriers, achieving future goals and skill enhancement.
Counselling addresses emotional well-being and mental health concerns.
Mentoring focuses on guiding individuals through their personal and professional journeys in a particular industry.
So what does this have to do with me?
Along with counselling, I'm a therapeutic coach. So back to the initial question, what is that?
Therapeutic coaching is when Counselling and Coaching are married together. It is a holistic approach to guide individuals in overcoming personal challenges, exploring deep barriers so that they are no longer present, improving well-being, and achieving their desired goals and mission.
This work and relationship is a transformative experience for the client. They will become empowered to:
Develop great awareness
Address and overcome obstacles
Understand the source of their issues
Build resilience
Gain clarity and redefine their values, beliefs, and mission
Create actionable steps
Be in control
Develop impactful relationships
Gain a stronger sense of self
Lead free and fulfilling lives
